75 rocking chairs and 75 high school students spent the day playing games, reading, talking and eating while rocking to raise money to renovate the Markham Center located in the Bob Jones Academy Quadrangle. Students raised funds to have the privilege of spending the day in the Academy Auditorium rocking in a rocking chair. A minimum of one hundred and fifty dollars got each student out of school for the day.
Because of the snow and ice, the event (which was scheduled for Friday) was moved to Monday and ran from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. The room was filled with video games noise, laughter and the squeaking sounds of rockers.
The marathon was under the direction of Steve Tompkins, BJA’s high school assistant principal. Mr. Tompkins spent the day regulating the rocking as well as giving out door prizes. Only students who raised the money could participate in the event. Over the coming days, those students who raised the most money as well as the class that raised the most per student will receive prizes such as free lunch in the Markham Center for a set number of days!
