Since 1998 BJA students have participated in the American Association of Christian School’s Youth Legislative Training Conference. Chosen based on an essay and on interest in our government, these students attend a one-week conference in Washington, D.C. This year Emily Ayers, Ethan Case, Lauren Jacquette, Donovan Lewis and Lydia Ludwig were chosen to attend the conference. The conference included a Mock Senate led by Mrs. Gail Nicholas—in which each student plays the role of one of the current members of the U.S. Senate. In addition to this activity, students spent a day on Capitol Hill visiting senators and house members as well as attending a congressional briefing. Another big feature is an evening tour of the Capitol. This year students met House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy while in Statuary Hall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell greeted the group on the steps of the Capitol. The South Carolina delegation attended the annual S.C. Prayer Breakfast hosted by Senator Tim Scott and also sat in on the House Judiciary hearing where Attorney General Loretta Lynch was being questioned by Representative Trey Gowdy and other committee members. The week ended on a high note when Lauren and Ethan were chosen to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. The week opened the eyes of all attendees on the need to pray for our government and especially for the Christians that serve in Washington.
