The season of giving and remembering the birth of our Lord has afforded Academy students many opportunities. Various groups have performed on campus and in town to share the joyous news of Christ’s birth.
The Christmas season began with both the elementary and high school choirs singing at the Biltmore House. The handbells and choirs then had fun performing for the BJU lighting ceremony. Piano students played at Haywood Mall. The high school choir and handbells participated in the Holiday Happenings in downtown Greenville. The elementary choirs performed in BJU’s Student Center—a favorite venue because of the crisp winter air and great acoustics. A first for elementary choirs took place when they performed at the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. They sang in the lobby next to the flight check-in area. Their concerts included a Spanish carol complete with maracas, guiro and claves; “Deck the Hall”; David Rasbach’s setting of “Hush, My Dear, Lie Still and Slumber”; “The Drum Carol”; and “Pat-A-Pan”; as well as “Nutcracker Jingles,” a setting of the “Jingle Bell” lyrics with Tchaikovsky’s beautiful melodies.
A Friday evening high school concert promised to be one not to miss! To commemorate BJA’s 90th year, this special Christmas concert held in Rodeheaver Auditorium featured the high school’s band and symphony orchestra. Over 20 talented alumni joined the groups in their musical communication of God’s love for us as displayed by the coming to earth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Selections included sacred and secular Christmas and winter favorites, and the choir joined the band and orchestra in two numbers. Afterwards refreshments were served in the lobby while the choir, handbell choir and string quartet serenaded our guests.
Finally, the elementary school Christmas tree decorations came in second place at the St. Francis Foundation Festival of Trees decorating competition. The BJA tree decorations featured angels made by our students with the theme of “Glory to God in the Highest.”
