The fictional civil case deals with a wrongful termination lawsuit of a 26-year veteran hospital employee. The plaintiff refused to get a mandatory flu shot vaccination. Her justification was that her daughter had received the flu shot and contracted MS within a week. The plaintiff fears that she carries the dormant MS gene and that the mandatory vaccination will kill her.
Students represent both plaintiff and defendant as witnesses, lawyers, bailiff/timekeepers. The two-hour cases are argued in front of a panel of lawyers and judges. The team is made up of nine students. Returning to the team this year are Hannah Lovegrove, Madysen Hotchkin, Richard Albert, Annie Hayes, Lauren Hancock and Katherine McCann. New students joining the team this year are seniors Eliza Isgett, Seth Cropsey and Jana Sanders. The team competed three times against Strom Thurmond, Christ Church Episcopal and Wade Hampton HS and is awaiting the results to be announced February 28. At that time, seven teams will be chosen to join the regional winners in Columbia for a two-day tournament.
