An end-of-year highlight is the kindergarten graduation—especially hearing the children tell what they want to be when they grow up. Again this year, the graduates did not fail to entertain us with their answers. Of course, there are those who want to be doctors, moms, pastors, and teachers—and we are glad for all of them. But then there are those who are more specific—a fire girl, a dentist who tells others about Jesus, an F22 Raptor fighter pilot in the US Air Force, an accountant like her mother, and (the one no one could have anticipated) a turtle doctor from Georgia!
These children have quite a few years to go before they realize what they will become, but in the meantime we hope to guide them to the more important question of who they are—both now and in the future. While the question of who a person becomes is more about oneself, who a person is should reflect the person of Christ.
First, a student must come to know that he is a child of God. While every person is created by God, only those who trust in Him does God recognize as His children. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).
Furthermore, as children of God, we hope they will become willing and obedient followers of God. “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children” (Ephesians 5:1).
And, to go one step further, we want to challenge the students to be ambassadors for Christ, encouraging others to become His children. “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
It is a privilege to be involved in Christian education, where we have the opportunity to direct children to God’s Word, which answers the questions of life and even gives discernment as to what questions are important in life. Let us covenant together to pray for the children that they may realize the importance of loving and following the Lord daily; and, perhaps, we can anticipate that in a few years the many turtles in Lake Cunningham will enjoy healthy living when a girl from the class of 2029 becomes a turtle doctor from Georgia.
