Earlier in this week of in-service I encouraged our faculty with this year’s school verse. Familiar yet rich, it’s both a promise and a challenge.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6).
I was relatively inexperienced and, as one person told me, naive, when in 1980 I left with my wife of just a few months to start a camp in a remote area of the Philippines. We had trusted God’s clear direction. We determined to avoid leaning on our own ability or wisdom. And that first summer of camp God marvelously brought to us over 300 campers.
I’m looking forward to chapel and other times this year when we can encourage our students to grow in their trust of our good God. Some of that will include helping them understand the ramifications of the verse. Have we really processed that it leaves no room for complaint—complaint about God’s work? About God’s choices? There’s no room for complaint.
But there is room to rehearse ways that God has demonstrated that he does direct our paths as we trust Him. God did that for Marty and me in a special way in the Philippines. And how many other ways has He directed our paths since then? Maybe this week we all could try to start a habit of using a little of the time going to or from school to tell each other a way that God kept this promise in the last day.
It’s just one of the ways to acknowledge Him—always.
