Bob Jones Academy was awarded the Technology Innovation Program Award at the elementary school level by the South Carolina Association for Educational Technology for its development and implementation of peer-to-peer robotics workshops. The award was presented during the annual SC Educational Technology Conference in Greenville. BJA’s innovative technology program, named “Mentoring the Future of Robotics,” highlighted the elementary robotics teams, under the direction of Dr. Jenny Copeland. After completing their regular season competition in the Spring of 2019, the fifth and sixth grade robotics teams worked to develop presentations to introduce kindergartners to robotics. The teams visited the Primary Center and worked in small groups with kindergartners, letting them meet the robotics, teaching them the basics of coding and robot handling, and then guiding them as they tried for themselves. The kindergartners loved learning from students in their own school and were highly motivated to learn more about robotics – all while the robotics team members thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sharing what they know and reac
hing out to the younger students.
