COVID-19-related situations involve many variables, so we are continuing to evaluate each situation on a case-by-case basis.
Our general framework is based on CDC/SC DHEC guidelines as well as our own monitoring of the overall health situation in the local community and at BJA. We implement layered prevention strategies against COVID-19 as needed.
Prevention Strategies
At school we will continue to maintain good handwashing and cleaning practices. We also have an air filtration system at school. Parents are welcome to have their students use a face covering.
We ask parents to remain sensitive to any symptoms or illness and keep affected children at home out of precaution. According to our illness guidelines, students who exhibit symptoms at school are sent home. We reserve the right to request a doctor’s note for return to school for illnesses that resemble COVID-19.
If a student develops COVID-like symptoms:
- Recommended: isolate the student if possible and contact a doctor if needed
- Refer to our school illness guidelines. A student should return only after improved symptoms AND no fever of 100 degrees or higher for at least 48 hours without fever-reducing medication. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school nurse with questions.
- If tested for COVID-19, the student must remain out of school while awaiting results. If the test result is negative, the student may return to school.
If a student tests positive:
- The student should be out of school at least 7 days from the test date or the clear start of symptoms.
- The student should return only after improved symptoms AND no fever of 100 degrees or higher for at least 48 hours without fever-reducing medication.
- Please don’t hesitate to contact the school nurse with questions.
If a student has known contact with someone who tested positive within the past 7 days please contact the school nurse.
If a student lives with someone who tests positive:
- The student should be out of school at least 5 days from last exposure and may return on day 6 with a negative test.
- Date of return is dependent on the actions taken by the family to limit exposure. The school nurse will be in contact to discuss the return date.
