Maria Smith (junior) has qualified to compete in Informative Speaking at the national tournament of the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). The tournament will be held in May 2021. Maria placed first in Informative Speaking at two NIETOC local tournaments, qualifying her for nationals. Informative Speaking competitors research and write their own 10-minute speech to educate listeners on a topic. They also create visual aids to enhance the speech.
Stephen Clater (senior) received the Academic All
American Award presented by the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). Stephen received this award based on his competitive ranks and accumulation of NSDA degrees, his overall grade point average, and his high score on the ACT. The Academic All American Award is considered one of the highest awards earned through the NSDA.
Maxim Chen (Class of 2020) placed first in the region in the MathFax competition for geometry. This is the first time a BJA student has placed first in geometry. Maxim received his trophy in a recent chapel presentation.
All-Tournament Soccer and Volleyball Awards: BJA’s soccer and volleyball teams each placed second in the SCACS state tournament. The following students received all-tournament awards:
- Volleyball: Jonathan Daulton, Will Daulton, Carissa Ring, Kate Sherf
- Soccer: Adam Gunther, Ben King, Andrew Howell
Alexis Peters (senior) was awarded The Congressional Award Gold Medal, Congress’ highest honor for civilian youth. Members of the United States Congress honored 478 youth from across America with the award. To qualify Alexis accumulated over 800 hours in voluntary public service, personal development, and physical fitness.
