This afternoon, Dr. Dan Nelson announced he will retire from his role as administrator of Bob Jones Academy at the end of the 2020 – 2021 school year.
“What a privilege it has been for me to be part of Bob Jones Academy,” said Nelson. “God has given me 10 rich years here and memories I will forever cherish. The Lord has given me a front row seat to observe the lives that have been shaped and the improvements He makes each year.”
During his tenure as BJA administrator, Nelson managed the consolidation of Bob Jones Elementary School, Bob Jones Junior High School and Bob Jones Academy into one school—Bob Jones Academy. Under his leadership, BJA was granted accreditation by five accrediting agencies, including regional accreditation and accreditation by the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools.
He maintained BJA’s emphasis on rigorous academics taught from a biblical worldview and spiritual growth opportunities through Bible classes, a consistently strong chapel program and many community ministry opportunities for students and faculty.
“I express my deep gratitude to the BJA administrative team, faculty and staff with whom I have been privileged to serve,” said Nelson. “Without question they are the finest team of Christian school educators in the world.”
“I also want to thank our parents for entrusting your children to BJA for the vitally important responsibility of education. What a tremendous blessing you have been to me, and what a joy it has been to have a small part in the shaping of your students’ lives for the glory of God.”
Under Nelson’s direction, BJA established a Vo-Tech program, BJA juniors and seniors began taking in-person and online college courses for dual credit, and the Academy continued its excellent track record in speech and debate and fine arts performance. Elementary and Middle School robotics clubs were established and have excelled in tough competitions. BJA added interscholastic sports, and students selected the lion as their mascot.
“Over his 10 years as BJA administrator, Dr. Nelson has maintained BJA’s strong commitment to excellence and biblical discipleship,” says Dr. Gary Weier, Bob Jones University’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “This commitment has produced faculty and students who faithfully follow Christ and excel in their calling. We’re grateful for Dr. Nelson and his humble leadership. He’s the first to remind us of God’s goodness in all that’s been done under his leadership.”
BJU President, Dr. Steve Pettit, announced a committee of BJA and BJU faculty and staff and BJA parents will be formed to begin the search for a new administrator.
