First-semester speech and debate tournaments are now over with the Academy team showing great strength in debating competitions in both North and South Carolina. At the Mauldin and Asheville tournaments, the Lincoln Douglas debaters took four out of the top six awards at each tournament.
The following are results from November meets.
The Academy Forensic team competed at the 33rd annual Mauldin HS Invitational. After 4 rounds of competition, the following students placed in their events:
Helena Sullivan – 4th-place Novice Reading
Lydia Petterson and Jessica Fryml – 2nd-place Duo Interpretation
Elliot Lovegrove – 3rd-place Impromptu Speaking; Elliot also competed in a showcase round of Impromptu Speaking and was awarded first place.
Marina Shew – 5th-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Caleb Miller – 4th-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Elliott Kelley – 2nd-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Nichole Martinson – 1st-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
Margaret Stegall – 4th-place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate
Will Christmas – 3rd-place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate
Daniel Leung – 2nd-place Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate
In addition, the team won the 3rd-place overall Sweepstakes award.

4th-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate – David Schaedel
3rd-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate with a 4-0 record – Caleb Miller
2nd-place Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate with a 4-0 record – Leah Petterson
2nd-place SPAR Debate – JP Basham
1st-place SPAR Debate – Will Christmas
1st-place Extemporaneous Speaking – Elliot Lovegrove
The team also won the 4th-place overall sweepstakes award.
The second semester tournaments will resume in January with a meet at Myers Park HS in Charlotte, N.C.
