Though retired for 16 years, Miss Edith Markham remains a part of Bob Jones Academy, the school to which she devoted 55 years of teaching. The Markham Center, obviously named in her honor, serves as a hub for students looking for friends and food. When asked about her reaction to the dedication of the Markham Center, the famed English teacher exclaimed she “was shocked, of course!”
Specializing in British literature, Miss Markham was able to travel to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland! Crossing the pond five times, Miss Markham visited “all the places and monuments” of her lectures. She also stopped by the cemeteries because, as she says, “the people you’re teaching about, you’re not going to meet them on the street!” With all this knowledge, she educated three generations of students.
Miss Markham still leads an active life; journeying forth from her CVA apartment.
Miss Markham goes on errands and to lunch dates with her friends and former coworkers. And as Mr. Pinkston mentioned in Student Body recently, Miss Markham’s hair appointment continues to the present day, consistently scheduled on Thursdays!
Students past and present would like to wish Miss Markham a very happy 90th birthday and a special “thank you” for her years of dedication to BJA!
