“Oh, how sweet! Oh, how cute!” repeated the smiling residents of a local retirement center as our K4 students entered the building on Wednesday, February 19. The K4 classes have been making birthday cards all year for the veterans who live at Haywood Estates as part of BJA’s community outreach project and recently had the opportunity to visit them. While at the retirement center, the boys and girls sang patriotic songs, quoted poems and sang “Jesus Loves Me.” They also sang to one of the veterans who was celebrating his birthday. The residents joined the children as they ended with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” Before returning to the buses, several students walked among the residents, personally greeting them and shaking their hands.
