With varsity sports at an end, the Academy finishes off the year with a Saturday Slam Volleyball Tournament. The tournament is a fundraiser held every year and provides the chance for students who may not play on the varsity teams to have some fun playing a sport they love. The students get to pick their own coed teams and their team names. The day starts at 9 a.m. with a round-robin tournament followed by lunch. After lunch the teams participate in single elimination rounds with the winners moving on. When the champion is determined, that team takes on the faculty team.
The 2014 Saturday Slam began with six teams. The players ranged from varsity volleyball, basketball and soccer players to the members of the mock trial team. No matter what the skill level was, every team had come to have an exciting time playing volleyball together. The round-robin tournament started—and from the beginning there was definitely a team that was the favorite to win. With a roster of seniors, SPIKADELIC appeared to be unbeatable. However, there was one team standing in the way. This team, called SET TO KILL, was comprised of five juniors and only two seniors. The teams met in the round-robin tournament, and both fought for every point. These games looked as if they were a foreshadowing of the championship game and the two teams that would battle it out. After achieving quick victories in the elimination round, SPIKEDELIC and SET TO KILL met in the championship to determine the winner. SET TO KILL had a rough start but quickly took command and showed the seniors that they were a force to be reckoned with. Following two hard-fought games, the favorite, SPIKADELIC, suffered a heartbreaking loss to SET TO KILL. Next was the game against the faculty. While SET TO KILL showed their skill, the faculty displayed their dominance—winning two straight games and leaving the high school team in the dust. They proved that no matter what age you are, you can still get out there and do something you love even when people say you are too old.
